On September 11, Wu Shicun, Chairman of the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance (Huayang Center) and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, met with Research Professor Emeritus Stein Tønnesson, former Director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), in Oslo, Norway. The two held a candid and in-depth exchange on a range of topics, including current China-Philippines relations, the situation at Ren'ai Jiao and Huangyan Dao, 2016 South China Sea Arbitration, long-term solutions to the South China Sea issue, China's Victory Day Military Parade, as well as think tank development and cooperation.
As an influential think tank in the field of global peace studies, the PRIO has, since its founding in 1965, been dedicated to exploring theoretical frameworks and practical pathways for building lasting peace among nations, groups, and individuals. It maintains an extensive academic network worldwide. Stein Tønnesson has closely followed and studied the South China Sea issue and regional geopolitics since the 1990s. He is a renowned scholar in the international South China Sea research community and served as Director of PRIO from 2001 to 2009.
Yang Li, Executive Director of the Institute for China-Europe Studies, and Xu Xiaodong, Executive Vice Chairman of the Huayang Center, accompanied the visit and participated in the discussions.
