On September 8, Wu Shicun, Chairman of the Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance (Huayang Center) and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS), visited Brussels, Belgium, to carry out a series of think tank exchange activities upon invitation.
During the visit, Wu Shicun held extensive discussions with European scholars including André Härtel, Head of the Brussel Office of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), and Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive of the European Policy Centre (EPC). The topics covered included China-EU relations, China's Victory Day Military Parade, Russia-Ukraine conflict, European strategic autonomy, transatlantic relations, the Taiwan issue, the South China Sea issue, and the so-called "overcapacity" narrative.
Wu Shicun emphasized that as major forces in global governance, China and the EU must deepen pragmatic cooperation within multilateral frameworks. He stressed that strengthening interactions between Chinese and European think tanks through institutionalized and regularized Track II diplomacy is a vital means of enhancing strategic trust and reducing cognitive biases.
During the visit, Wu Shicun also met with Li Yan, Chargé d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Belgium.
Yang Li, Executive Director of the Institute for China-Europe Studies, and Xu Xiaodong, Executive Vice Chairman of the Huayang Center, also took part in the exchange activities in Belgium.
